Searching for Silverheels Jeannie Mobley 9781481400299 Books

I liked the way this story revealed history on many levels. First: looking back at a legend and investigating the truth of its history. Second: by using story to reveal history (in this case USA WWI and Women's Suffrage.) And Third: via character--a young girl in rural Colorado coming to terms with and acquires a better understanding of herself and others. This was a quiet story, but well researched and well-told.

Searching for Silverheels Jeannie Mobley 9781481400299 Books Reviews

I was a big fan of Jeannie Mobley's first book, KATERINA'S WISH, and her new book was just as engaging. The real-world-inspired mystery of Silverheels, rich historical setting, and Pearl's growth from swoony romance-obsessed girl to a young woman with ideas and conviction all made for a compelling and fun read.
The beautiful Silverheels was a kind, selfless nurse to the dying--or was she a scheming con artist? Every story has numerous interpretations, as Jeannie Mobley shows in SEARCHING FOR SILVERHEELS. Mobley skillfully weaves Colorado history into an engaging fictional story of a thirteen-year-old girl torn between forces (and boys) in her small town. Both Pearl and her nemesis, the suffragist Josie Gilbert, are compelling, well-developed characters. Mobley expertly captures not only the thrill of investigating a mystery, but also the dynamics of small-town life. A thoroughly enjoyable read--highly recommended!
This fantastic sophomore outing confirms Jeannie Mobley as one of my favorite middle-grade authors. This book has the perfect mix of mystery, history, politics, and romance, with a good dose of humor thrown in for good measure.

The story, set during WWI, focuses on the relationship between 13-year-old Pearl and 70-something Josie. Josie wants all American women to have the vote; Pearl wants Josie to stop bothering the tourists at her mother's cafe with her political rants and suffragist handbills. And maybe she'd like a little romance on the side at the Fourth of July picnic, too.

Pearl's and Josie's brushes with each other lead to a bet regarding the truth behind a local legend the dancer Silverheels, for whom Mount Silverheels is named. I could say more, but the twisty-turny plot is really so delicious that the less you know going in, the better.

I give this book two huge thumbs up--I fell in love with the characters, learned a lot about a specific corner of Colorado and a specific time in history, and was smiling the whole time. Can't ask for a better reading experience than that!
Set in a small mining town in Colorado at the beginning of World War I, Searching for Silverheels is a delightful mix of mystery, history, and a coming-of-age story that teens and adults will love. That said, there is a darker side to this story that explores ethnic prejudices, the subjugation of women, and the question of free speech versus sedition. I applaud Jeannie Mobley for writing about issues that still resonate today. As a middle school social studies teacher, this is exactly the kind of book I need for my classroom. As a reader, this is storytelling at its best that kept me up past my bedtime. Pearl is such a terrific protagonist, but it was Josie who I found myself cheering for by the end of the book. Jeannie Mobley’s debut novel, Katerina’s Wish, was so good, I was worried she couldn’t match the magic of her first book. Boy, was I wrong. Happily so.

With a plucky heroine and a writing style that is a joy to read, Searching for Silverheels is an instant classic. Highly recommended.
I was lucky enough to read an advance copy of SEARCHING FOR SILVERHEELS, which I have been looking forward to. The binding says it is coming out in September--so get ready! This is a perfect book for middle-school classrooms and libraries, for girls who love mysteries or historical fiction or who are from Colorado. Hint anyone with an affiliation with Wellesley College will also want to read this novel for a surprise revelation that comes toward the end!

SEARCHING FOR SILVERHEELS is a compelling and distinctive historical novel, set in a small town in Colorado in 1914. The main character, thirteen-year-old Pearl, is an unusual heroine for a historical novel nowadays because rather than being the familiar feisty girl who resists the constraints imposed upon her by her gender, she is sweet, obedient, romantic, and dreamy. Helping her mother in the Silverheels Cafe she has plenty of time to swoon over handsome boys and wonder about the legend of the beautiful Silverheels--but in the cafe, she also encounters and has to deal with sour elderly patron Josie Gilbert, who is forever distributing suffragist pamphlets and alienating the customers.

Pearl reluctantly gets to know Josie better, as she searches for the truth behind the legend of Silverheels, and must help Josie when she faces dire consequences for her political actions. As Pearl uncovers secrets about Silverheels, she comes to a greater understanding of people in her town, of her family, and of the possibilities of life as a woman. The novel is deftly plotted; the characters are rich and believable; and the story is gripping with some wonderfully humorous moments (as when Pearl is roped into participating in a kissing booth at the Fourth of July picnic.) A wonderful second novel by the author of the much-lauded KATERINA'S WISH.
I very much enjoyed Searching for Silverheels. As a local and hearing often of this mystery I enjoyed reading an interpretation of what could have been.
I would recommend this book to any girl or young woman! It's a great example of a teen-aged girl gaining self confidence and learning to take a stand for something she believes in while doing so.
Having spent many weekends exploring this area with my family back in the day when my then-husband was an amateur prospector, it brought to life a picture of the Como- Fairplay area again. Good work, Jeannie!
