What's wonderful about this story is how it lets a reader really feel what it would be like to be on the streets, right at the scene, for something as tumultuous-exciting-horrific-scary as a revolution, what it would be like to live through not only the storming of palaces, but the chaos afterward. Sherwood Smith has done a remarkable job in making the scene real and yet not so desperately grim that a reader won't enjoy it. There are complicated questions here: how do you win loyalty? How can you hold a nation together? They're gracefully handled in a tale that keeps up a high level of excitement the whole way through. This story contains both ideas *and* action, both keeps you thinking and biting your nails.

I think the book can appeal to a wide age range, and I can really imagine siblings reading it together and enjoying it.

A cute story about a brother and sister who participate in a revolution against their evil uncle the king. It contains hints of the political wisdom found in Smith's more complex young adult stories - in this case what drives a revolution and what are its likely consequences - and the characters also seem simpler versions of their adventuresome and endearing young adult counterparts, nurturing noble ideals and courageously carrying them through.

While the action is fun and the characters likeable, Smith has said that much from the original manuscript was cut down for the middle grade market. Perhaps it is this, or the fact that there is no romance in this story, that leave it feeling a little weaker. However, for young readers who appreciate adventure and good characters it could be a stepping stone to the wonderful worlds of A Posse of Princesses and Crown Duel, and a stimulant for the discussion of history, rulers and revolutions.
Maybe it's just because I read it in the past few months, but this book brought to mind Shannon Hale's Princess Academy Palace of Stone. Both MG fantasy, both dealing with revolution, both with strong, smart heroines. While Hale's book skirts around the edges of a revolution, Smith's characters find themselves smack dab in the middle of a full blown revolution. I definitely enjoyed both in their own ways. There are likeable characters, strong friendships, and lots of adventure.

One thing I love about Smith's books is how interconnected they are, but most still work even if one hasn't read others set in Satorias-deles. The world was familiar to me since I've read many of her other Sartorias-deles books, but this book also stands well on its own.

I enjoyed reading about Lilah, her friends, and their adventures, and it's very interesting to me that Smith originally wrote this as a teenager. I am very interested to see what younger readers think of this book since they are obviously the intended audience. I will also definitely check out the sequel, Sartor.

I think fans of Hale's books and Tamora Pierce's Circle of Magic (Sandry's Book (Circle of Magic, Book 1)) books will enjoy this one, especially fans who aren't specifically looking for a romantic subplot (there's not even the hint of one in this book). Fans of Smith's Wren books (Wren to the Rescue (Wren Books)) will also be likely to enjoy this one.
I hated it. Not my genre
I really did enjoy this book. It reminded me more of Sherwood Smith's other earlier novels.

It isn't my favorite Sherwood Smith novel, but if you are a fan of hers then it is a MUST that you read this cute addition. If you aren't a fan, but like fantasy with strong females that take the lead, then you will enjoy this as well. It is filled with action, fun, and great characters. It reads a lot like the Wren novels and is intended for a younger audience.

If you enjoy fun, light, purely for entertainment reading, then I would recommend to pick this up and read it. It's a quick, fun read.
I enjoyed this book quite a bit even though there's a long and largely pointless magical detour in the middle of it. The protagonist is realistically childish but also realistically involved in a revolution that goes realistically awry. Much better than the nominal sequel Sartor.
Smith's Crown Duel-Court Duel, and its subsequently published prequel, Stranger to Command, were riveting and compelling in terms of suspense, action and relationships. I was looking forward to more of the same with Spy Princess, but was disappointed. This book moves along with dreadful languor - had I not read Smith's prior work, I would surely have put this one down. Although the setting was charged with potential for action, the plot held little of the political, militaristic and relational maneuvering that characterized the "Remanlna" series. I will probably give the sequel, "Sartor", a shot, but I must admit my misgivings.

Give us more of the suspense and action that compelled us in the Crown-Duel, Smith!

Book and story is a good concept, but pulled off in epic level proportions...meaning it is more dramatic than is necessary, and quite long winded. The tale could have been written with greater skill with half of the description, and half of the narrative. Over all, I got bored halfway through, and struggled to finish. I reread the description and think it sounds like a really good story, then open the book again, and think "ai gad, this book again" and continue to save it so I don't make the mistake of purchasing it once more.
