Love love love this series! :D Diana Wynne Jones makes characters and stories that will keep you interested from start to finish. They're fast paced and easy to read; basically, they're a ton of fun. If you buy this book, I would suggest also buying the other two volumes of the Chronicles of Chrestomanci or The Chrestomanci Quartet (Charmed Life, Witch Week, The Magicians of Caprona, The Lives of Christopher Chant) so you can read the series in order. DWJ's recommended order for the series is:

The Chronicles of Chrestomanci Vol 3 Conrad Fate / The Pinhoe Egg Diana Wynne Jones Books Reviews

Two great books in this series. They have a similar feel and are both great examples of DW Jones's work.
I have read all three volumes and have enjoyed them very much. The third one is by far my favorite - complex and well developed with layers of ideas. Particularly enjoy getting a glimpse of Christopher as a teenager. These are well written stories very appropriate for boys and girls starting at the age of 8 or 9 and are enjoyable for adults as well.
I enjoyed some of these books.
They are very imaginative, creating an alternate magical world, but somehow they have a staid Victorian starch to them.
The characters become a bit wooden at times and the plot quite contrived.
Not sure I would recommend these to my friends...
My son loves Diana Wynne Jones' books. They are creative, immersive, and we'll written. DWJ is a master of her craft - RIP.
Purchased Vol. 1,2,3 as a gift and was well liked.
Overall this book, containing two seperate Chrestomanci titles, is a great buy. I enjoyed the Pinhoe Egg very much - it had all of the Diana Wynne Jones traits that I like. She has such great character development and build-up, if anything, her endings seem a little rushed and just slightly anticlimatic. She just does such a wonderful job building up to the end, that it's hard to top it.

Conrad's Fate was interesting and I really liked being able to see that time in the Chrestomanci world from another character's perspective, but it was slightly lacking. What, I'm not sure, but her books I've noticed seem to do that from time to time. She will have absolutely amazing stories and then other ones that don't quite draw me in the way some of them do. It could just be my personal taste, but I don't know.

Overall, I'd buy it again. For 6.99 (or even 7.99 as I've seen it some places) that's a great price for 2 complete books, especially when Conrad's Fate first came out I think that cost $11 or so by itself.
It never ceases to amaze me. Her stories and her plot twists, I mean. Some of the predictable things in her books are the romance pairings, but the fact that she never forgets the extra details in her story. She adds a lot of details in her books and so the story sometimes drags on at the beginning but when it gets going, you can see the details thread themselves to some sort of conclusion.
