No Shoes No Shirt No Spells A Magic Baking Cozy Mystery Mystic Cafe Series Book 1 edition by Rose Pressey Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

Seriously disappointing book. I've read several of Pressey's books and have enjoyed them so I expected to like this one as well. The sheer number of typos, however, was enough to ruin it for me. There was even a formatting problem toward the end of the middle. I seriously doubt she proofread her writing this time.

I can't believe I spent even a $1 on this. The typos alone would've made it a poor freebie. On top of typos and formatting issues though, there were inconsistencies and simply poor plotting. You get 0 training, aren't told the laws, make one mistake, and the authorities take everything away from you? That's just ridiculous. In the beginning of the book it's implied that she's terrible in the kitchen yet everyone raves about her cooking? She had such anxiety about taking over when she's had no experience with running a business and supposedly set fire to her kitchen at some point in her past but then after a day she's a professional and a brilliant cook and baker.

There are so many other things wrong with this book, I can't go into all of it. It reminds me of a first draft of a novel. Pressey needs to go back and put more thought and effort into it. Take the time to polish it before publishing it and moving on to her next work.

No Shoes No Shirt No Spells A Magic Baking Cozy Mystery Mystic Cafe Series Book 1 edition by Rose Pressey Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

For .99 cents, this was a great little book. Plot was interesting; there were lots of twists. I do want to say though, that, if the author aspires to the big leagues, she needs a better editor. There were places where the dialogue was disjointed, and, downright bad. And, while there are regional "dialects / slang", it was a bit of a reach for this author. It's ambitious to try to pull people's dialogue from different regions together and expect that it's all going to make sense. For example, how many Imelda's are there in Kentucky? (Okay, she's really from Texas... but, we don't find that out until way later in the book.). (Imelda was a great "absent character", nonetheless.) In fact that whole Texas thing, in my opinion should have been in the first couple of chapters. In some places, though, the author really nailed the descriptions of things and situations. Her description in the end of the sunrise was just amazing. I would like to see more of *that* kind of writing and less of the hurried / rushed thoughts and dialogue. Again, great book, beach read / airplane novel / hiding from the in-laws... taking a nap kind of book.
Elly just inherited a cafe with a secret - it comes with a spell book and ingredients that allow her to add a 'special something' to her baking, when sh has a particular nudge in mind. These aren't huge spells, mind, just gentle pushes.

Of course - with great responsibility comes plenty of rules, and very early on Elly makes a blunder.... a big blunder

From there, the magical investigators are calling, she's trying to find a reversal of the spell that went wrong, and if that wasn't enough, there's a super cute guy who is suffering from her mistake. A super cute guy that she would very much like to explore a relationship with.

A wonderful introduction to the Mystic Cafe, allowing readers to discover Elly's magic and restrictions much as she does.... with a ouch of conflict, a tiny mystery, a very misguided ex and plenty of moments where the small town charm just oozes from the pages.

I purchased a copy of this title for my own library. This review was not expected, nor required al conclusions are my own responsibility.
I got this book for free off of a while back and I was interested in it because it is a modern-esq take on witches in the world and that seemed fun (and the cover was bright and fun). So...sometimes when I am reading in bed at night I feel bad for leaving the light on and reading a physical book, so I started reading this on my phone while my husband sleeps but I can't fall asleep. This was a great book for that purpose.

Since it wasn't a review book, I had all the time I needed to read it slowly and I could pick it up when I was in between books etc. I read it slowly and when I could and that was nice. The book has good pacing and while I read it slowly, there was enough plot to keep it moving steadily forward. It is a categorized as a Paranormal Romance but it was a clean romance. I really liked the main character she was relatable and had been through some things and your felt that as she learns how to navigate this new life and the cafe.

If you are looking for something fun and light, and like romance and a bit of magic this is a fun one to pick up.

I do have to note, that I did notice a few typos in the edition I had though, so if that is going to bother you - steer clear.
One of my good friends loves this author, so I gave her books a try. I read this one and the first in the Halloween series. They're fine. They're light-hearted, an easy read, and gave me a couple chuckles. But sometimes the writing is just bad. Incongruities, spelling things out for the reader so clearly that it's like being bashed in the eyes with the words, typos, cliches... I want to keep going because I actually think this author has promise. She weaves a good yarn. But either she's still new and learning, or her editor is 17 years old. Or both. So I will keep going, but only when the books are on big sale. I'm not paying $9.99 for writing of this quality when $7.99 buys real classics and amazing stories. I just can't.
